The chief and council of Batchewana First Nation congratulate mayor-elect Matthew Shoemaker and new and returning council members on their victory in the election.

“We enjoyed working with Mayor Provenzano over the last eight years. We thank him for his contributions to the local community. We had developed a positive working relationship and appreciated his commitment to our initiatives. We anticipate continuing our important work with the newly elected council as we move forward," said Chief Dean Sayers.

The chief and council of Batchewana First Nation also say they are excited to work with the new mayor and council for "the betterment of both Sault Ste. Marie and the local First Nations."

Matthew Shoemaker received 9,626 votes on Monday night’s election, and "a mayoral win of 44 per cent of the votes is no easy feat and indicates fierce support from the local community," reads Batchewana First Nation news release.
