Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has taken an individual into custody and charged them with mischief after they barricaded themselves in a room at Sault Area Hospital late Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported in the incident.

A patient who barricaded themself in a room at Sault Area Hospital late Tuesday morning has been taken into custody by police.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a code silver — which is used to alert those in the hospital that there is a person with a weapon on hospital grounds — at approximately 11 a.m.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident, which prompted a large police presence outside of the hospital’s emergency department.

Sault Area Hospital (SAH) later confirmed via email the incident occurred in the emergency department and was "contained quickly" by police and hospital staff.

"All incidents of violence are taken seriously at SAH and ongoing efforts continue to address violence," said SAH spokesperson Rose Calibani.

The individual is now facing mischief charges.
