Aven Reid lucked out at the Algoma Farmers' Market in the Bondar Pavilion parking lot today.

Aven is showing off the lettuce he found with the help of his lucky red train that he's reported to be almost never without.

He did find it in his heart to part with the pretty train for some good down-home fiddling, though, as the Wild Turkeys entertained shoppers on the hill behind the market.

Aven took an avid interest in their melodious sounds, and with Mom and Baby Brother in tow, he made a beeline for the junk drawer and popped his train on top of it, then took a few steps back to dance a little jig as only a toddler can.

SooToday.com got pretty lucky at the market, too.

We found some awesome made-locally produce, preserves, crafts, jewelery, soaps and natural beauty products.

We especially liked the man soap from Purple Urchin and the Bug Off! from Kate and Allie's Beauty by Nature.

The honey from Mary's Bees is also the bee's knees and the plethora of preserves from many a vendor could make a pastry cook weak in the knees.

Algoma's Farmers' Market runs until October 6.

Starting next week, it will be open Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. as well as Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Available now at the market are lettuce, herbs, onions, bedding plants and annuals.

Coming very soon are strawberries and swiss chard, followed by peas, raspberries and handpicked Michigan cherries in mid-July.

At the beginning of August come to Algoma Farmers' Market for beans, beats, cucumber, dill (pickle making season), oregano, thyme, carrots, zucchini and summer squash.

Later that month the stalls will be filling up with corn, potatoes, new comb honey, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, currents, gooseberries and blueberries.

In September winter squashes come into season at Algoma Farmers' Market, along with raw liquid honey, pumpkins, gourds, grapes, apples, plums and catnip.

Available throughout the season are, rhubarb, baked goods (including fresh home made bread), maple syrup, pickles, jams, jellies, comb honey, weaving, sewing, cakes, candies, oh, and don't forget - alpaca products and more.

Many items are available by pre-order so, if you don't find what you're looking for, just ask one of the many friendly vendors.
