JASON ALLEN STATE SENATOR 37TH DISTRICT

****************************** Allen legislation establishes moose hunting season

LANSING - Legislation that would require the Natural Resources Commission to establish the first moose hunting season in Michigan has been approved by the state Senate.

Senator Jason Allen, (Republican-Traverse City), sponsored the measure.

“There has been considerable interest in expanding hunting and fishing opportunities in Michigan and many observers believe that creating a moose hunting season in Michigan will help to attract both new and existing sportsmen,” Allen said. “If carefully studied and controlled, moose can be successfully hunted without impacting the overall health of the population.”

Allen, who chairs the Senate commerce and tourism committee, said outdoor recreation remains a valuable component to the state’s economy.

“A moose hunt would draw people to the Upper Peninsula, generating revenue for local economies and for the Department of Natural Resources and Environment through license and application fees,” Allen said.

The Northern Michigan lawmaker said the state’s lottery system for elk and bear hunting has generated much interest and a moose license likely would have similar appeal.

Senate Bill 1013 now goes to the House for further consideration.
