NEWS RELEASE

ART GALLERY OF ALGOMA

************************ Our new exhibitions for the fall

Opening reception Thursday,September 16, 7 p.m.

The Art Gallery of Algoma launches four new exhibitions on Thursday evening featuring the work of Trevor Gould, Christopher Shoust, the Sault Youth Association and the Group of Seven.

A wonderful selection of wine will be served by Mary Ludlow of Vinaissance along with appetizers courtesy of Iron Bridge’s Red Top Inn.

A special model train demonstration [photo] by Bob Nisbet will round out this cultural celebration.

Montreal artist Trevor Gould presents a series of sculptures and paintings that respond to a selection of Modernist works from the AGA’s permanent collection.

Over the past 25 years Gould has established a practice of critiquing collections and sites across North America, Europe and Africa.

This exhibition entitled "It Feels Like History" in the Main Gallery represents the sculptor-painter’s first aesthetic foray into Northern Ontario.

Sault Ste. Marie artist Christopher Shoust employs metaphorical imagery and cursive gesture in "Project Room."

The resultant work "Communicating the Incommunicable" that wraps around the space speaks of the daily struggle and desire of those diagnosed with mental illness to be understood and accepted.

Shoust is a recent graduate of Algoma University’s Fine Arts program who has lived, studied and worked in Ontario, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

In the Education Gallery a series of black and white photographs feature young people from our community, holding hand-made signs.

Their renderings are fresh, unrehearsed and compelling.

This initiative entitled "Youth Shout Out" was developed by the Art Gallery of Algoma and the Sault Youth Association as a means to give a solid voice to those underrepresented segments of the population.

In conjunction with the 2010 Group of Seven Train Event along the Algoma Central Railway, the AGA presents a selection of paintings and drawings by the Group of Seven in the Lobby.

The works on display entitled "Icons for the Nation" are from the Gallery’s permanent collection, as well as a few rare pieces from a local private collection that have never been seen in public!
