************************* Police and school officials declare zero tolerance on drugs

East Algoma OPP in conjunction with the Sault Ste. Marie Drug Enforcement Unit conducted an investigation regarding drug use at local high schools in Elliot Lake and Blind River.

In Elliot Lake eight young offenders were arrested for possession, eight students were suspended from school and all arrested parties were diverted through the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

One young offender was arrested for obstruct police.

A small quantity of cannabis marijuana was seized.

In Blind River seven students were identified as being part of some illegal marijuana possession and partaking of same while on school property.

One young person was charged with possession of a controlled substance and six others were dealt with by way of diversion through the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

One of the youths was found to have an outstanding warrant and was transported to Sudbury where the warrant was issued.

All seven students were suspended from school as a result of their involvement in this incident.

A small quantity of marijuana was seized.

The charged youth will appear in court in Blind River on June 2, 2008.
