The Michigan Department of Transportation has released details of a number of highway-construction projects now starting in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

Here's the full text of the announcement:

************************** Road improvements under way in eastern U.P.

Road construction is in full swing in the eastern Upper Peninsula as crews work to improve approximately 40 miles of state trunkline while upgrading signs on more than 100 miles of US-2 and M-117.

"These improvements will make for a smoother, safer ride and we appreciate everyone's patience," said John Batchelder, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Newberry Transportation Service Center manager. Starting today and continuing through mid-October, nearly 90 miles of signs also will be replaced on US-2 in Mackinac County beginning in St. Ignace and ending east of Manistique.

On M-117, between US-2 and M-28, sign replacement is set to begin in early June and could continue through mid-July. Motorists should be aware that shoulders will be closed as crews work on the signs. I-75 will see a number of major improvements this season. On I-75, between Portage Road and M-123, there will be lane closures and ramp restrictions through early July.

And, from M-123 north to M-134, these restrictions will continue through mid-October.

Crews will be resurfacing the roadway, repairing guardrails, and upgrading on-ramps. In Chippewa County, M-123 will be restricted to one lane from M-28 to north of Eckerman line as crews work through mid-May to extend the life of the pavement on the 7-mile stretch.

Also on M-123, from H-40 east to M-28, lane closures will continue through early June. One lane of M-129 will be closed between Ten Mile Road and Three Mile Road while crews seal cracks and resurface the roadway. This project will continue through early June. And also through early June, motorists will see improvements being made on M-221 (Brimley Road) between M-28 and the Waishkey River Bridge. Traffic will be restricted to one lane.

Additional work this year involves two bridge rehabilitation projects.

Starting June 1, work will begin on the Munuscong River bridge near Rudyard on M-48, and starting July 5, work will begin on the bridge over Kneebone Creek in Trout Lake on M-123. "Statistics show that more motorists are injured than construction workers in work zone accidents," Batchelder said. "So slow down and be aware for your sake as well as theirs."
