Over the month of February offices with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will be engaging in a safe driving initiative focusing on the proper use and installation of car seats and child restraints.

Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, infants must use a rear-facing car seat until they weigh at least 20 pounds.

Children must use a forward-facing child car seat when they weigh between 20-40 pounds. Your child must remain in a forward-facing car seat until they weigh at least 40 pounds.

Children must remain in a booster seat if they are under eight years of age, weigh between 40 and 80 pounds, and are less than 4’9” tall. Once a child turns eight years of age, or weighs 80 pounds or more, or is 4’9” or taller they may use a seatbelt.  

It is important for drivers to remember that they are responsible for ensuring that passengers under 16 are properly secured. The set fines under the highway traffic act for infractions relating to child safety seats range from $85 to $200.
