The Anishinabek Nation Chiefs-in-Assembly unanimously confirmed Wednesday that Patrick Madahbee is its new commissioner on governance.

In accepting the position, Madahbee said he will "guard the interests of our communities."

Madahbee has also held the position of Grand Council Chief, a role he served in the 1980s and again in the nine years prior to current Grand Council Chief Glen Hare taking over.

"For the 47 years I have been involved, we have been talking about getting Indian Affairs off our backs. We have an opportunity here now to do this," Madahbee said in a prepared statement.

Madahbee's new position will see him coordinate the Anishinaabe self-government initiatives and will facilitate the drive to comprehensive self-government.
