**************************** Crime Prevention Week November 7-13

Connecting to kids today, preventing crime tomorrow

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is pleased to announce that they will be celebrating and participating in Crime Prevention Week running this year from November 7 – November 13.

This year’s Crime Prevention Week theme is “Connecting to Kids Today – Preventing Crime Tomorrow.”

Youth are our future.

Crime prevention rests on investing in our children.

Crime Prevention Week re-affirms the importance of all citizens as stakeholders in society to work together to prevent crime.

Indeed as stakeholders in society, we must all contribute to its security and cannot rely entirely upon the police.

In the early 1800’s, Sir Robert Peel was quoted as saying: “The police are the public and the public are the police.”

This holds true today more than ever.

Our Service is very appreciative of the citizens that provide assistance and those that volunteer their time in different capacities.

We are extremely grateful for what they do.

We must all do our part to help create a stronger and safer community.

Crime Prevention Week is also an opportune time for police services to highlight successful partnerships in areas where the police and community work together to prevent crime.

Some of these areas include:

- School Liaison officers working with schools and committees to prevent youth crime; and initiatives and programs such as Crime Stoppers, drug and alcohol safety and prevention, internet safety and bullying prevention.

- Senior safety and the Drive Wise Program.

To help celebrate and participate in Crime Prevention Week, the Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to invite the public to some scheduled crime prevention events that they have been planed for Crime Prevention Week.
