QUEEN’S PARK - NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is urging the McGuinty Liberal government to finally take action to address the pressing problems of soaring water rates and lack of access to drinkable water in the Township of North Shore.

“Residents in Pronto and Serpent River are being forced to pay more and more for water but they can’t even drink the water they get,” said Horwath. “It is outrageous that a provincial government would simply stand by while Ontarians go without water not for days or weeks - but for months and years.”

North Shore residents have repeatedly sought help from the McGuinty government to secure clean water and cover the highs costs of water treatment but remain without access to potable water, as they have been for most of the past 10 years.

“Small communities like North Shore simply don’t have enough residents to pay the full costs of expensive water treatment processes,” said Horwath. “The McGuinty government brags about making Ontario a world leader in clean water technology exports, but it can’t even ensure access to drinkable water in its own backyard.”

Horwarth pledged to continue to push for action at Queen’s Park until all residents in North Shore have access to clean and affordable water.
