ALGOMA UNIVERSITY

************************ TIMMINS, ON - Algoma University will begin teaching two university courses on the campus of Northern College in Timmins, beginning in September. "We are very excited to be offering these courses in Timmins, and to be doing so in collaboration with Northern College, which has graciously agreed to host us on its campus," says Dr. Richard Myers, president of Algoma University. "Part of our mandate at Algoma University is to deliver university education to northern Ontario communities, and this is an important step to serving greater Timmins with programming that will have a lasting impact on this area." The two courses initially being offered are "The Political Economy of Social Welfare" and "Introduction to Community Economic and Social Development", both of which are core courses in the proposed social work program at Algoma U as well as degree programs in community economic and social development. "The prospect of Algoma University commencing to offer courses towards what we hope will become a full Bachelor of Social Work program being offered in Timmins, is the culmination of several years dialogue and work between our two institutions," says Fred Gibbons, president of Northern College. "We have a keen interest in seeing this initiative move forward because many of the prospective students are in fact graduates of our two-year social services worker program. Today's announcement reinforces the mission of Northern College in bringing success to our northern communities through learning and partnerships." The social welfare course will be taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., throughout the fall semester, via videoconference from Algoma's main campus in Sault Ste. Marie.

The community economic and social development course will be taught in person on the Northern College campus over two four-day weekends - October 1-4, and November 5-8.

Algoma University is seeking approval from the province to offer an innovative Bachelor of Social Work program with a special focus on social work in northern, indigenous, rural and remote communities.

The proposal includes a plan to deliver the program on the Northern College campus in Timmins. Representatives from Algoma University will be visiting the Porcupine Campus, Northern College from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 19 for an information session.

Any students interested in taking either course are encouraged to attend.
