**************************** Algoma University to host Engaging our Community Conference

SAULT STE. MARIE - Algoma University is proud to announce that it will be hosting the first annual Engaging Our Community Conference, September 9 - 10, 2011.

This two day conference will provide a unique opportunity for faculty and staff at Algoma University to come together with other community partners to showcase the research, innovation, and scholarship taking place in Sault Ste. Marie.

As the overarching theme suggests, this conference is all about engaging our community.

The conference is an initiative of two Algoma University faculty members. Dr. Istvan Imre (Department of Biology) and Dr. Michelle Atkin (Wishart Library) realized that there is no established forum for the broader community to hear about the research and scholarship taking place on campus at the university.

"Members of the university community have the opportunity to hear about each others' work through an inter-departmental colloquial series that runs throughout the academic year," said Dr. Atkin. "But the broader community hasn't had a formal avenue for learning about the research and scholarship taking place on campus. The Engaging Our Community Conference will provide a new forum for engagement between the Algoma U community, the general public, and other community partners involved in research and innovation."

The conference will feature presentations and panel discussions about specific topics spanning a range of disciplines from the humanities, sciences and social sciences.

The panels will feature Algoma University faculty and staff, as well as members of the public with expertise related to the specific topics.

The conference program will include presentations on:

- People, Environments and Health

- Group of Seven, Glenn Gould and Algoma Central Railway (ACR)

- Re-Orienting Relations through Community Research and Action

- Engaging Our Community in Understanding Health Providers use of Technology

- Complexities of Young Worker Safety Issues

- Engaging Our Environment

- Beyond Paper: Participatory Past at Community Archives

- Engaging Our Understanding of the End

"The Conference Organizing Committee is very excited about the program," said Dr. Atkin. "We'd like to extend an invitation to the entire Sault Ste. Marie community to join us for this first annual conference."

Conference participation is free and open to all members of the Sault community who register.
