Algoma U Food Bank filled by Club Calabrese

Generous Donation from Club Calabrese fills Algoma U Student Food Bank

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - November 27, 2013): Tis the season of giving, and the hearts and stomachs of many students at Algoma University will be full after receiving a generous donation of non-perishable food items from Club Calabrese of Sault Ste. Marie. 

It is with great gratitude and thanks that the Algoma University Student Food Bank accepts the generous donation which has lined their shelves at such a critical time.

"Club Calabrese of Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to support students of our post-secondary institutions.  We recognise that budgets may be tight at the end of the semester and lack of funds can make the difference between staying in school or dropping out. We hope that our contribution will lighten the financial burden and assist in some way," said Dr. Rose Caicco, member of Club Calabrese, and alumna of Algoma University.

Club Calabrese is a cultural not-for-profit in Sault Ste. Marie that aims to promote the Italian language and culture in the community and to offer assistance to people in need. 

Running for over 30 years, Club Calabrese's very successful food drive has supported Women in Crisis, St. Vincent DePaul Society, and the Food Bank run by Kalna McGoldrick through the donation of tonnes of non-perishable food items.

Algoma University was also the recipient of their food bank donation three years ago. 

The Club's Board of Governors is responsible for selecting the recipient(s) of the annual food drive, with this year both Algoma University and Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology benefiting from their generosity.

All food items are donated by the Club Calabrese's members.

"I am so overwhelmed by the generosity of Club Calabrese - I cannot thank them enough for their support," said Amanda Lindi, student and President/Co-Executive Director of the Algoma University Student Food Bank.  "This donation will help provide food and nutrition to countless students who are facing financial challenges or are in need of emergency food services.  This donation is particularly welcomed as the University continues to expand, and more students are utilising our services."

The Algoma University Student Food Bank is a collectively-run student service that recognises the pressing, and often hidden consequences of student hunger. 

The Food Bank works to address student food security on campus by offering emergency food relief to students.

The Food Bank has been operating at the University since May of 2007.
