We fell well short of last year's all-time record of $259 million, but the City of Sault Ste. Marie accepted 1,095 building permits in 2023, worth a total of $148 million.

That's the third-best showing by the local construction trade over the last dozen years.

The commercial sector accounted for 85 permits worth $43.1 million.

There were 31 industrial permits worth $31 million, 31 government and institutional permits worth $17.3 million and 948 residential permits valued at $56.7 million.

Twenty-three permits issued in December were worth $8.8 million.

They included:

  • a $7.5-million permit for a utility building containing mechanical and electrical equipment for Algoma Steel's electric arc furnace
  • a $400,000 permit for a tilt conveyor building for Algoma Steel's plate and strip complex
  • a $100,000 permit to fit out a location next to COBS Bread in Churchill Plaza for a new Mediterranean-fusion eatery, the newest location of London, Ontario-born Tahini’s. In just five years, Tahini's has grown to 35 locations. It offers authentic Halal dishes
