NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE POLICE SERVICE

**************************
On Dec. 9, 2016, City Police responded to a call regarding a male shoplifter. Police attended at a local hill top store and met with two loss prevention officers.

Investigation revealed that a male, age 50, allegedly concealed a measuring tape and left the store without attempting to pay for it. The male was apprehended for the theft and while the arrest was being made, both the male and female loss prevention officers were allegedly assaulted.

A police check of the male revealed that the accused was also on a recognizance of bail with a condition not to be in the City of Sault Ste. Marie unless for court reasons and he was also on probation with a court ordered condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. A search of the male was done and a quantity of what is believed to be marijuana was found.

City Police continued the arrest and charges were laid as follows: theft under $5,000, assault x2, possession of a controlled substance, breach of recognizance and breach of probation. The accused will appear in WASH court (weekend and statutory holiday court) on Dec. 10, 2016.
