Andre Trahan, who appeared before City Council last fall to argue against the 100 Percent Smoke Free Initiative on behalf of the local Bar Owners Association, is running for City Council.

Trahan owns the Bayview Athletic Club at 135 Glasgow Avenue.

He filed his nomination papers for Ward 6 at the Civic Centre on Friday.

Trahan tells SooToday.com that he'll run primarily on an economic development platform.

"The Sault doesn't seem to be going anywhere," he says.

Other declared candidates in Ward 6:

- Incumbent Frank J. Manzo Sr. - Patrick (P.J.) Mizzi - Ron Schinners

The other Ward Six incumbent, Peter Vaudry, has not yet filed nomination papers and has been widely discussed as a potential mayoral candidate.

Vaudry recently underwent triple bypass surgery and is expected to return to his City Council duties at the next regular meeting on May 12.

Trahan says that Vaudry told him some time ago that he'll be running for Mayor, not in Ward 6.
