Wind warning for Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island continued

High winds today.

This is a warning that damaging winds are imminent or occurring in these regions.

Monitor weather conditions. Listen for updated statements.

A major fall storm racing from the eastern tip of Lake Superior across northeastern Ontario to southern James Bay by this evening is bringing quite the variety of inclement weather with it today.

Areas southeast of the track of the storm centre got briefly into the mild air.

These regions will be subject to very strong southwesterly winds of 60 gusting to 90 km/h as cold air quickly returns in the wake of a sharp Arctic cold front blasting east across the region.

These winds will gradually diminish later today as the storm centre moves further away.

Areas near the storm centre track will receive a period of freezing rain which may come down quite heavy at times.

Local ice accretion amounts of 5 to 10 mm are possible in these areas before the precipitation changes briefly to rain then back to snow this morning as the storm centre passes by.

Finally northwestern parts will remain in the cold air resulting in heavy snow continuing as the storm centre passes by.

Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm are likely by the time the snow tapers off to flurries in the wake of the storm centre by this evening.

Strong winds in the wake of the storm centre will usher in even colder air and cause reduced visibility at times in blowing snow.

Motorists in the area should exercise extreme caution as dangerous winter driving conditions continue across much of the district, especially in northwestern areas.

Very strong winds will also make driving conditions difficult in southern areas especially for those in high profile vehicles.

Please refer to the latest public forecasts for further details.
