Rio de Janeiro has been selected today by the International Olympic Committee as the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics, beating out Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo.
This marks the first occasion where a South American city has won a Summer Olympics bid.
Chicago was eliminated in the first round of voting despite the fact that U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are in Copenhagen advocating for the city.
