14 new Ontario forest fires reported yesterday

MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

**************************** There were 14 new fires in the province yesterday.

The majority of the fires were lightning caused and occurred in Thunder Bay (5), Red Lake (3), Nipigon (2), Dryden (2), Sioux Lookout (1), and Sudbury (1) districts.

These fires burned a total of 2.6 hectares and no further issues are anticipated.

These areas will continue to pick up fires from recent lightning activity over the next several days.

There are 73 active fires currently burning in Ontario.

To date, there have been 1,055 fires this season that have burned 624,870 hectares of land.

Fire teams continue with monitoring and suppression of ongoing fires. 

Fire behavior on large fires is expected to remain low to moderate over the next several days.

Recycle of personnel and equipment continues across the province on fire and headquarter complexes.

We have a total of 175 out of province staff still assisting in Ontario.

Two fires were reported on Saturday, August 27.

- Sudbury 83 - undetermined cause - out - 0.1 hectares - northeast of Fairbanks, near Gordon Lake

- North Bay 52 - undetermined cause - out - 0.1 hectares - Big Caribou Lake area

One new fire was reported by the evening of August 28.

- Cochrane 27 - lightning caused - not under control - 0.2 hectares - southeast of Chabbie Lake

There are an additional nine active fires in the region. 

This is a cluster of fires located in Cochrane district, lightning caused, and are being observed around the border of James Bay.

The fire hazard is low in the far north, but rises to moderate in the south.
