It was a feast of food and culture last night during the first ever Bon Soo Taste of Unity event hosted by the Sault Community Career Centre at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre.

Intended as a fundraiser for this year's upcoming Passport to Unity Festival, 122 attendees enjoyed an evening of delectable ethnic food, and African music and dance presented by the Akwaba Cultural Exchange.

Alisha Rosset, resource and outreach specialist for the Sault Community Career Centre, told SooToday.com that all the event's menu selections were recipes included in the Passport to Unity Cookbook which is available at the Career Centre for $7.

The menu included biscuits, borscht, Asian Thai salad, yogurt butter chicken, curried cauliflower, lemon and green pea rice, Jamaican baked bananas, and peanut butter biscotti.

Returning to the Sault after a successful performance during last year's Passport to Unity Festival, the Akwaba Cultural Exchange enchanted the diners with rich drum rhythms, colourful regalia, and compelling dance.

"They love this city," Rosset told us. "They love coming here. They call it their second home."

This year's Passport to Unity Festival happens May 4-6 and will include an Aboriginal event, a "trip" around the Sault's culture with stops at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre among others, and the popular Essar Centre event which features an array of ethnic food, music and dance.
