A gunman who held off police for more than six hours and snarled downtown traffic surrendered peacefully at 10:16 a.m.

This image was captured by a faithful SooToday.com who was confined to his downtown apartment throughout the standoff and was not permitted to send his child to school.

City Police issued the following news release at 11:05 a.m.:

************************* The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service successfully negotiated a safe resolution to the incident involving an armed male in the downtown area.

A 24-year-old male was taken into custody at approximately 10:16 a.m. just outside the rear area of a building located in the 100 block of Gore Street.

The male surrendered to the Emergency Services Unit officers peacefully.

The firearm was recovered.

There were no injuries reported to anyone in this incident.

The incident remains under investigation.

There are no further details to be released at this time.
