There are conflicting reports on the number of lives lost.

According to CBC News, 96 people were killed. But, amid indications there were no survivors, Russian officials believe 132 people were aboard.

Early speculation has focused on extremely foggy weather as a likely factor in the tragedy.

President Kaczynki, who is 60, had been leading a Polish delegation to Russia for the 70th anniversary of the massacre of Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katyn.
