VIDEO: Disaster Dining cookoff raises awareness for preparedness

Is your pantry stocked?

Would you and your family survive a weeks long stretch without power to your family home? What happens when the food in your fridge spoils, and there are no stores to replenish your food supply?

That's the premise behind a Red Cross event on Thursday that saw Sault Police and Sault Fire members square off in a non-perishable food barbecue showdown outside Walmart.

Teams engaged in a friendly competition to see who could craft the tastiest dish using only the items that would typically be found in one's pantry.

The staff at Walmart made a beef stew that everyone agreed, looked and smelled "pretty good" and fire services surprised participants with fresh-made pastries that this reporter can personally confirm were beyond decent.

Who won? Watch and find out.
