NEWS RELEASE

COALITION FOR ALGOMA
PASSENGER TRAINS

*************************
The Group of Seven and Glenn Gould Train Event will take place on the weekend of September 19 to September 21, 2014.

Come celebrate the 96th anniversary of Canada’s most famous painters, The Group of Seven, painting along the Algoma Central Railway.

The event will begin on the evening of Friday, September 19 at the Art Gallery of Algoma with a reception and presentation on A.Y. Jackson, this year’s featured artist, and Jackson’s Algoma experience.

On September 21 and 22, participants will ride the Algoma Central Railway in one direction between the Sault and Hawk Junction/Wawa and by coach in the other direction.

The train trip will be on the same rails that took members of the Group to their various painting sites along the ACR.

It will include a live commentary by art historian, Michael Burtch, on the Group’s painting sites visible from the train.

By motor coach, participants will trace Gould’s footsteps as they tour those haunts – the waterfalls and shorelines – frequented by the pianist.

In the afternoon, participants will travel along what has been called one of Canada’s finest road trips – the magnificent eastern coastline of Lake Superior.

Stops will be made to visit lookouts and points of interest including Lake Superior Provincial Park and its comprehensive Visitor Centre.

On Saturday night, participants will stay at the Wawa Motor Inn, famous pianist Glenn Gould’s former summer lodging.

In the evening following a dinner at the Motor Inn, there will be a presentation by musicologist, Dale Innes, on the role the north played in the music of Glenn Gould.

On the morning of the 22nd, following an opportunity to participate in a sketchbook, journaling or photography art session, or a coach tour of Wawa, those who travelled the ACR to Hawk Junction will return to Sault Ste. Marie by coach while the second group travels back on the ACR.

There will also be a lunch on one of the days at Rock Island Lodge set on the shore of Lake Superior.

Tickets are available at Community Theatre Centre Box Office, Station Mall, 705-945-7299 or at their website.

Information about the event can be found at www.groupofseventrainevent.ca or by calling 705-949 2301 ext. 4320.
