Soo Theatre Project announces Fiddler on the Roof

"Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as... as a fiddler on the roof." announces Tevya, a humble milkman from the Russian village of Anatevka.

And, so begins a tale of love and laughter, devotion and defiance, and changing traditions - a tale beloved worldwide.

Together with its unforgettable score, Tevye's heartfelt struggle with the new customs of a younger generation is both universal and timeless, and that is one explanation for the incredible success of Fiddler on the Roof.

When the show first opened in the United States in 1964, a time of change and crumbling traditions in our own country, the lessons it brought from 1905 Anatevka offered the hope and promise of reconciliation to a turbulent society.

Today, in the midst of great change and faced with so many of the same issues, Tevye's story is as relevant as ever.

The Soo Theatre Project is proud to announce this acclaimed show as their big summer musical, which will be performed July 15-18 on their historic stage.

The Soo Theatre is seeking singers, actors, set constructors, painters, properties coordinators, and costumers and running crew for the show.

Theatrical auditions for the musical will be held at the theatre Sunday, April 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Monday, April 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

All of those interested in being a part of this great Broadway show are welcome to stop in at the auditions to meet the directors and sign up for available positions.

Auditionees who have a prepared musical selection are encouraged to bring sheet music for the accompanist. (Please limit your song to one verse.)

All are welcome.

If you do not have a prepared selection, music will be provided for you from the show.

Bob Koger, Neebish Island, will be directing Fiddler on the Roof.

This is Koger's debut as a director for the Soo Theatre Project.

He comes to us with thirty-seven years of experience directing high school theatre programs in Minnesota, Hawaii and Michigan.

Among his credits is the founding of the Michigan High School Theatre Festival sponsored by the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association.

This is a festival/competition theatre experience afforded all Michigan high school students since 1970.

He has twice been recognized as Michigan High School Theatre Teacher of the Year.

Koger is particularly proud of the ten state high school theatre championships that his students have garnered.

Joining Koger in producing Fiddler on the Roof are Soo Theatre Project veteran vocal music director Karen Hughes and choreographer Dianna George.

Local residents will recognize Hughes for her outstanding work with the Soo Theatre Project as a teacher, director and performer since the project's inception in 2005.

George, founding president and head of the dance department is known for filling the house at LSSU for Soo Theatre’s/STARS annual dance show.

Make sure to put April 25 or April 26 on your calendar to come out and be a part of Soo Theatre Project.
