Without Willie P. Bennett by his side as he has been for about 25 years, Fred Eaglesmith entertained approximately 180 eager Fredheads at the Elks Hall on Saturday, June 23.
Without Willie P. Bennett by his side as he has been for about 25 years, Fred Eaglesmith entertained approximately 180 eager Fredheads at the Elks Hall on Saturday, June 23.

Suffering a heart attack a little over a month ago has forced Bennett to take a much needed hiatus from his usually grueling tour schedule.

"Willie had a heart attack on stage and finished the show. Now that's a tough man," Eaglesmith told the audience.

Accompanied by Kori Heppner (drums), Luke Stackhouse (bass) and Matty Simpson (guitar, keyboard), Eaglesmith's performance did not disappoint even the most diehard fans as the songs and stories guided us all through a retrospective of his 30 year career.

Three things we learned Fred Eaglesmith hates: hissing, hummus and hippies.

"If you don't like me, just stand up and tell me to go f**k myself. Don't hiss at me," exclaimed Eaglesmith.

Hummus he claims is just drywall plaster with tahini in it.

And hippies just really upset him.

But don't let this list of things hated fool you.

Eaglesmith was actually quite cheerful, smiling and laughing on stage, joking with the audience and even accommodating a brief interview before the show.

SooToday.com videographer Pete Gualtieri was on hand to capture the busiest man in Canadian music in action.

Really cool Fred fact: Fred is the only Canadian composer to hold the number one spot on the American Bluegrass chart.

The song is Thirty Years of Farming as performed by James King.
