'Uplifting and intoxicating', The Elwins play the Soo this Friday

Thanks to a mutual love of The Flaming Lips, high school buds Travis Stokl and Matthew Sweeney decided to start a band.

Thanks to a mutual love of The Flaming Lips, high school buds Travis Stokl and Matthew Sweeney decided to start a band.

That lead to the formation of The Elwins in 2008, adding Feurd Moore and Christopher Shannon (later replaced by Frankie Figliomeni) following the release of its self-titled EP.

The Toronto-based four-piece has since issued two full-length releases - And I Thank You in 2012 and Play For Keeps in February of 2015.

Play For Keeps' first single So Down Low may be familiar to most Canadian alternative music listeners after charting for six months and appearing in a nation-wide Fido advertising campaign.

"…rock 'n rollers The Elwins play the type of hook-filled and slightly quirky indie rock that's sure to appeal to Tokyo Police Club, Strokes and Born Ruffians fans," writes Keery Doole of New Canadian Music.

"Filled with a proverbial carbon injection, every song on the album [Play For Keeps] succeeds in uplifting and intoxicating its listener, even if it might leave one gasping for air," said Sam Hawkins in his review for Quip Magazine.

The Elwins are currently on a cross-Canada tour with a stop scheduled in Sault Ste. Marie at Loplops (651 Queen St. East) on Friday, November 6.

Show time is 10 p.m. and you must be 19 or older to attend.

Advanced tickets are $7 and may be purchased at www.loplops.com
