Toronto Symphony Orchestra "Northern Lights" concert opens the Sault Symphony Orchestra's 34th season

Friday Sept. 15 - 8 p.m. Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre

It is with great anticipation and pleasure that the Sault Symphony opens the 2006-2007 season with "Northern Lights," an evening of music featuring the internationally acclaimed Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Alain Trudel conductor.

The Juno Award winning TSO is celebrating its 85th season.

Throughout its history the orchestra has welcomed some of the greatest international artists and has performed at such hallowed destinations as New York's Carnegie Hall, The Musikverein in Vienna and other prestigious locations throughout the USA, Japan, Australia, Europe and the Canadian North.

The Northern Lights tour features Michael Sweeney, TSO principal bassoonist as soloist.

The program includes works by Brahms, Mozart, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and more.

Alain Trudel has established himself as one of the best trombonists in the world.

He is widely admired as a conductor, having led professional orchestras on three continents.

In the spring of this year, Trudel was named Principal Conductor of the CBC Radio Orchestra based in Vancouver, the only radio orchestra in North America.

He has been conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra since 2004.

On August 9 of this year the Orchestre Symphonique de Laval announced the appointment of Trudel as principal conductor and artistic director of the OSL.

"We are truly fortunate here in the North that, for the past two years, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra has decided to take its show on the road offering Northern Ontario communities the opportunity to hear their artistry. Rarely do we host such an extraordinary concert here in the Sault. It will be a wonderful evening to share with family and friends," says Frank Gardi of the Sault Symphony.

In addition to the evening performance, there will be two student concerts entitled "Symphonic Kaleidoscope" on Thursday morning for Grades 3 through 12 at the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre.

Attending a student concert with the Toronto Symphony is an exciting experience for students of all grade levels.

For some students this is their first experience listening to and seeing an orchestra.

On Friday musicians will fan out to schools across Algoma presenting various education programmes.

Working closely with the Sault Symphony and both boards of education these programmes include "Masterclasses," in-school "Preludes" performances and "Composer Chats."

In order to share the TSO's education programme with a wider audience, a DVD aimed at young music lovers has been created.

The goal is to have an impact, not only in the concert hall, but throughout the community.

Ticket prices are $30 for adults, $27 for seniors and $12 for students.

Tickets are available at the Station Mall Box Office or call 945-7299 to reserve by credit card.

Credit card purchases may also be made online at www.saultsymphony.com
