PRESS RELEASE

CINÉFEST SUDBURY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

*************************

Sudbury – Cinéfest Sudbury is pleased to announce the Northern Connections programming for the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Festival.

The Northern Connections programme is a forum for emerging filmmakers from Northern Ontario to display their talent.

This year’s line-up includes excellent feature, documentary and short films from Northern Ontario.

Northern Connections Feature Films

An official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival and the first feature film from Canadian directors Ingrid Veninger and Simon Reynolds, Only is a glimpse into the heightened impressions and dreams of two unlikely 12-year-olds.

Daniel (Jacob Switzer) lives in a motel managed by his parents in Northern Ontario.

People come and people go -- Daniel hardly notices.

Until one day a girl arrives and changes his world.

Over the course of a single day, they venture on a journey, exploring deep secrets, dark fears, and first love in a pure and powerful meeting of young hearts and minds.

Dawgs Playing Poker is a feature length comedy about a crime of opportunity.

Follow a colorful cast of characters as they chase each other through a night of kidnapping, forced inebriation, club dancing, bar brawling, first dates and loves realized, helium explosions, electrocutions and hilarious sudden deaths.

A pulsating, youthful, attractive and absurd farce, this film moves at a pace driven by the sounds of rave, acid-jazz and punk rock music.

A world of vibrant primary colors serves as a backdrop for all the action, giving Dawgs Playing Poker an overall comic book appearance.

Northern Connections Documentary Films

From independent filmmaker John Gardiner comes Full Moon Lightnin', the powerful and gripping story of blues musician Floyd Lee.

It has been over 60 years since New York City blues man Floyd Lee left the hill country of Mississippi.

With his exodus he also turned his back on a troubled childhood and a harsh life in the cotton fields.

Abandoned by a mother he never knew, Floyd still wrestles with unanswered questions to his mysterious and painful past.

Now at the age of 73, Floyd and his band embark on a deeply personal journey back home to Mississippi to reconnect with the family he left behind and search for the family he never knew.

Along the way they are forced to deal with an unexpected tragedy that will change their lives forever.

Just Say It! explores the bizarre and hilarious nature of people’s number one fear: public speaking.

It examines the history and psychology of this fear while following Luke King, the director, as he takes a public speaking class and attends Ontario’s largest provincial speech competition for kids.

Just Say It! features candid interviews with Canadian celebrities including CBC’s Peter Mansbridge, George Chuvalo and the cast of the Royal Canadian Air Farce as they attempt to help Luke shed some light on Canadians’ deepest fear.
