LSSU to host the Fly Fishing Film Tour on February 22 at Arts Centre

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - While some area anglers can get their fix through the winter by fishing through the ice, others are patiently waiting for open-water season.

Lake Superior State University will be host to an event February 22 that may help those fishermen get through the hard-water months: the Fly Fishing Film Tour.

Whether you are an avid fly fisherman, are interested in the pursuit, or simply dream of fishing in beautiful places, F3T is for you.

Join your friends for this film festival, which includes a vendor show before the event, starting at 4 p.m. in the LSSU Arts Center.

“The Fly Fishing Film Tour features films submitted by passionate anglers from all over the world,” said local fly fishing guide Nome Buckman, who is spearheading the committee that is bringing the event to campus. “These cream-of-the-crop human interest stories are compiled to create a film tour each year that shows in many areas around the U.S. nationally.”

In F3T 2015, viewers will be transported to Iceland, the Florida Keys, Cuba, Mongolia, Alaska, Bahamas, British Columbia, the Louisiana Coast, Montana, California, Michigan, Illinois, Oregon and beyond.

Participants will feel what it was like to be with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, and learn about a veterans support group called Project Healing Waters.

It’s the first time the tour has come to Sault Ste. Marie, said Buckman, of Pickford, who used to enjoy the show when she lived on the East Coast.

The event is being sponsored by her guide service, Reel North LLC, as well as the LSSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club, the Soo Area Sportsmen’s Club, and the Sault Ste. Marie Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“F3T brings angling communities together and provides a much needed vacation from winter,” said Buckman. “We will have many venders, including The Two Hearted Trout Unlimited Chapter, many of the area sportsmen’s clubs, Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO), and many silent auction items, including a Reel North guided trip for pike, brand new, your-choice TFO rod, local restaurant gift certificates, and more.”

Doors open at 4 p.m., when participants are invited to visit with vendor booths in the LSSU Arts Center lobby.

Films start at 5 p.m. with a break between 6-6:30 p.m. before the second half of the film festival, which ends at 7:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the LSSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club and the Sault Ste. Marie Kids Fishing Pond.

Tickets are $12 each in advance for the general public and $15 at the door.

Student tickets are $5.

Tickets are available at ticketriver.com.

Search “Fly Fishing Film Sault” under “Find an Event.”

Student tickets may be purchased locally at the LSSU Regional Outdoor Center on campus, adjacent to the Shouldice Library, or by calling 906-635-2890.
