Local original music trio Startlefish will be strutting their stuff live and celebrating a birthday this weekend at the Downbeat Lounge.

Consisting of band members Craig West, Ed Young and Christopher Walls, the outfit has been a staple of the local scene in recent months. Startlefish varies between light acoustic renditions of their music and full-on rock n' roll depending on the mood of their audience. They have become known for performing primarily original music, but they do throw in a few cover songs by artists like Primus, David Bowie, and John Lennon to keep a balance.

On Saturday December 18, the band will also be celebrating the birthday of guitarist Craig West, and a few special guests are expected to turn up for the occasion, higlighted by a short set of songs by a group of mysterious and unidentified players billed only as 'The Groomsmen', allowing West to have his cake and play the gig too.

Startlefish just finished recording their debut CD at Red Gecko Studios on St. Joseph's Island and will be releasing the product in early 2005.

The show starts at 10:30 pm. There is no cover charge.
