Sault musicians receive award nominations

A few Sault Ste. Marie references appear on the nominees list for the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards released earlier this week by Music and Film in Motion.

A few Sault Ste. Marie references appear on the nominees list for the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards released earlier this week by Music and Film in Motion.

Now living in Ottawa, Sault-born Kalle Mattson finds himself named in three categories; Best Music Video (A Love Song to the City, directed by Justin Colautti), Best Album By a Solo Artist (Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold), and Best Songwriter (A Love Song to the City).

Frank Deresti and the Lake Effect is nominated for Best Album By a Duo or Group for it's self-titled 2014 release.

Sault blues musician Rusty McCarthy is selected as a nominee for Best Engineer for his work on Britta Wolfert's album Moonstone.

In the film categories, Fall, which was shot in Sault Ste. Marie and Niagara Falls, is given a nod for Best Feature Film.

The 2015 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards Conference will take place in Sudbury from Thursday, May 28 through Saturday, May 30 and includes a variety of related panels, workshops and forums.

The Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m. at the Sudbury Theatre Centre on Saturday, May 30.

A number of music showcases are also scheduled throughout the weekend:

Thursday, May 28

8 p.m. at the Laughing Buddha
Performers include Mike Charette, Sunday Wilde, Lia, Rose-Erin Stokes, and Quatuor Philip May Quartet

Friday, May 29

8 p.m. at the Fromagerie
Performers include Annie Sumi, David Dino White, Mimi O'Bonsawin, Nick Sherman, and Kalle Mattson

11 p.m. at the Townehouse Tavern
Performers include Canucky Bluegrass Boys, The Greenbank Trio, Frank Deresti and the Lake Effect, and Murder Murder

Saturday, May 30

10 p.m. at the Fuse Nightclub
Performers include Carden Cove, The Almighty Rhombus, and The Trews.
