MFM bringing a taste of Northern Ontario to the 25th anniversary OCFF Conference in Niagara Falls

SUDBURY - The 25th anniversary OCFF Conference in Niagara Falls will be the best networking event for Ontario's folk music community in 2011.

Music and Film in Motion (MFM) is celebrating by showcasing some of the North’s best acts.

The Northern Ontario Showcase presented by MFM is taking place on Friday, October 14 in Room Salon A at the Marriott Gateway on the Falls Hotel at 11:45 a.m.

Taking part in this year’s showcase is Faraway Neighbours from North Bay, Sunday Wilde from Atikokan, Rusty McCarthy from Sault Ste. Marie and Pistol George Warren from Sudbury.

Faraway Neighbours is an ambient, indie-folk trio taking a page or two from influences like Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear and others.

Their origin and music stems from the heart of Northern Ontario, and their debut effort, Carry On, Man portrays that in a sort-of ambivalent fashion.

Sunday Wilde is a powerful and intense vocalist, a rare voice that speaks from the primal soul.

Sunday is a songwriter who explores the subjects of grief, addiction, love and the torment of social and family dysfunction.

Her lyrics and delivery make it abundantly clear that she speaks from experience and authority.

Sunday writes from the heart and draws from observations of personal interactions and emotions.

Rusty McCarthy is a guitarist, composer, painter and poet.

Rusty lives in Sault Ste. Marie and regularly travels to work on music projects.

As capable of playing jazz and blues as he is charting a string section for a film score, he is an artist with many styles.

Pistol George Warren is a Sudbury based nine-piece country/soul collective drawing influences from a wide breadth of musical backgrounds.

Think Exile on Main Street-era Rolling Stones with a Northern Ontario vibe.

Fusing a pervasive obsession with Motown soul and their love of old country music, Pistol George Warren have carved out a unique and powerful aesthetic that is the collective product of 20th century popular music while being, undeniably, all their own.

The 25th anniversary OCFF Conference is taking place at the Marriott Gateway on the Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario from October 13 to 16, 2011.
