McGuinty Government investment supporting equipment purchase at cmmunity-based arts organization

Sault Ste. Marie - Sault Potters Guild Inc. celebrated a $10,500 grant from the McGuinty government through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to purchase new pottery equipment David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

“We recognize the importance of supporting arts organizations such as the Sault Potters Guild Inc. as they encourage residents of Sault Ste. Marie to learn a new skill, expand their creative horizons and socialize with their neighbours in a positive atmosphere,” said Orazietti. “With this investment our government is helping the Guild purchase new equipment and bring a functional pottery centre back to Sault Ste. Marie.”

In 2000, the Sault College Pottery facility closed its doors and presented the club with a new challenge - to find a properly equipped community facility.

Thanks to the grant, Sault Potters Guild Inc. will be able to buy equipment that will allow them to re-establish a working potters guild learning centre in the community.

“The Sault Potters Guild Inc. would like to thank the OTF for their support of a grant which will enable the Guild to resume their teaching of Pottery to both children and adults,” said Marilyn Ubaldi, Chairperson of Sault Potters Guild Inc.  “We would also like to thank David Orazietti, MPP for his support in this endeavour.  The heritage craft of pottery will continue to flourish with the support of the Provincial Government and the naturally gifted community of Sault Ste. Marie.”

Since 1969 the club has been teaching the members of the Sault Ste. Marie community the art of pottery.

The organization is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Arts Council, the Art Gallery of Algoma, as well as FUSION –Clay and Glass, an Ontario-wide organization catering to clay and stained glass artisans.

The Guild conducts outreach at community days, promotes ongoing class activities and publishes promotional materials in the Sault Ste. Marie Recreation Guide and Arts Council newsletter to encourage participation.

Guild members share their expertise by providing free instruction and therefore, course fees are only charged to cover the costs of consumable materials used in the process of making pottery (clay, glaze etc).
