Stuff you learn from punk rock

Ab Irato is defined as; AB IRATO - Civil Law. Lat. phrase which signifies by a man in anger. It is applied to bequests or gifts, which a man makes adverse to the interest of his heir, in consequence of anger or hatred against him. Thus a devise made under these circumstances is called a testament ab irato. And the suit which the heirs institute to annul this will is called an action ab irato.

Ab Irato is also the title of a Franz Liszt classical piece making a Google search for band information a tad frustrating.

The band has shared the stage with punk legends the Ripcordz, the 3 Tards, the Dickies, the Casualties, DOA, the Misfits, UK Subs, the Circle Jerks and many others.

They are currently on tour with Conflict who, unfortunately, cannot make it to the Sault Ste. Marie stop.

More Montreal

Recently, two other Montreal-based bands visited our fair city; The Alley Dukes at the Speakeasy on Monday, May 28 and the Brains at Foggy Notions on Wednesday, May 30.

The Alley Dukes' sound is straight-up, traditional Rockabilly paired with lyrics spawned from the dirty mind of a sex-crazed teenage boy living in the gutter.

They sing about girls, sex, acts of doing stuff to various body parts and punching hippies.

Their style has been appropriately dubbed Pornobilly.

It has to be noted that when their CD is popped into your computer, iTunes lists the genre as "Gospel/Religious."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Brains also have roots in traditional Rockabilly but have injected it with a big healthy dose of punk rock with a 50's horror flick twist.

They sing about girls, drinking, zombies and various other topics related to the undead.

Their style can be called Psychobilly or Horrorbilly.

The Alley Dukes dedicate their new album The Alley Dukes Go Back to College to any man who bows at the alter of Brian Setzer.

The Brains paid homage to Brian Setzer by performing two Stray Cats tunes as bookends to their set.

The Alley Dukes had tons of pomade in their hair and sported tattoos a plenty.

The Brains wore creepy black face make up and also had some impressive body ink, including the word "sorry" tattoooed over their livers.

That's funny.

After their show, the members of the Alley Dukes hung around signing merch, consuming adult beverages and discussing some of their more controversial gigs.

Guitar player, Zak Duke expressed disappointment that our mutual friend, Lindsay Pugh had not come out to the show.

Following the Brains' show, the members also signed merch and engaged in some frosty beverages, later playing a few rousing games of Guitar Hero.

Front man, Rene el Brain got his butt kicked game after game by a little girl.

Alley Dukes quote of the night: "My father is very proud of me. I used to play really hardcore stuff, but he loves the traditional rockabilly I'm playing now. He plays it for his friends all the time, but tells them to ignore the lyrics. It's OK though, because none of them know English anyway." - Danny Duke

The Brains quote of the night: "Wow! This game is really hard!" - Rene el Brain
