Merling Trio returns to Lake State

Recognized as one of today’s premier ensembles, the Merling Trio takes its name from the Danish violin maker Paul Merling.

The group’s Carnegie Hall debut was in 1993, and since then, the trio has given many recitals across the United States, Canada and Europe, while also being named a finalist for the Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award.

They have performed with many orchestras, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra.

The group’s members – Renata Artman Knific, Bruce Uchimura and Susan Wiersema Uchimura, are also esteemed music educators.

While in residence at the School of Music at Western Michigan University, they have been mentors to many students who have gone on to hold positions in major orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the world.

They have also taught at the Schlern International Music Festival and the ENCORE School for Strings.

Renata Artman Knific has been playing the violin internationally since she was 21, when she toured with the English Chamber Orchestra. She has toured across Europe, Asia, North and South America.

Bruce Uchimura has served as the principal cellist of the Augusta (Georgia) Symphony and was the first person to be named associate conductor of the ensemble.

He received a bachelor’s degree in music from Juilliard School of Music and a master of music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Susan Wiersema Uchimura plays the piano and graduated valedictorian from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

She also maintains an active private studio. 

The trio has released several CDs since 1995 and has showcased the works of many composers, such as C. Curtis-Smith, Mozart and Brahms.

Their most recent recording is titled “Postcards in E.”
