STUDIO DANCE ARTS

*************************
When Tanya Kim, host of CTV's eTalk Daily, was back in her hometown recently helping to kick off the Steelback Centre's opening ceremonies, she made a special visit to Sault Ste. Marie's Studio Dance Arts, locally owned and operated by her brother, Richard Kim.

A former dancer herself, Tanya came out to watch some of the Studio Dance Arts students rehearse an opening act routine as members of the new Steelback Dance Team.

Trevor Zachary, event manger at the Steelback Centre approached Richard in August to put together a performance leading into a video reveal of the Steelback Centre's new logo at the recent logo launch party at the Roberta Bondar Pavillion.

Then, hardly a week before the big Steelback opening concert celebration, Trevor informed the studio that Steelback CEO Frank D'Angelo had personally requested the dancers to open up for his band.

The logo launch team involved dancers from Studio Dance Arts: Ashley Carlstrom, Tania Castellani, Amanda Hunter, Kendra Komsa and Johnny McMillan.

The current opening act team includes seven Studio Dance Arts students: Ashley Carlstrom, Shelby Carlstrom, Kaila Fadock, Dana Hinding, Tee Komsa, Lauren Running and Johnny McMillan (shown).

Studio Dance Arts director Richard Kim choreographs the Steelback Dance Team, along with SDA faculty member Tania Castellani as his assistant.

"The Steelback Dance Team is an exciting opportunity for these young dancers. Every performer's goal is to have an audience and a great venue to perform in. To be a part of the city's new Steelback Centre in any capacity is really an honor for us," says Richard.

"It's great that Trevor Zachary has an interest in creating some sort of official dance team for the centre. Hopefully, this Steelback Dance Team concept grows.

"The ideas are endless as far as the team's involvement with the facility. Who knows, maybe our local Greyhounds will one day need an athletic squad to cheer them on, while entertaining the crown at their home games! My goal with this eventually, is to provide performance opportunities for young dancers throughout the community."

Studio Dance Arts is located in downtown Queen Street and has just started its 06/07 dance season.

Programs are offered at the beginner through advanced levels starting at the age of two years.

Classes in ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, tap, acro.gym, singing, acting and hiphop are available, as well as adult classes in hiphop, tap and pilates.

The school's faculty includes a staff of highly qualified teachers/choreographers and adjudicators, including; Richard Kim, Carolyn Caputo-McCauley, Jessica Charron, Tania Castellani, Tracee Smith, Helga Szabo, Elizabeth Hooper and Tim Murphy.

Studio Dance Arts is also the only school in the Algoma region to exclusively offer the internationally recognized and respected Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet system of training and exams.
