LSSU holds launch party for new literary and arts magazineBorder Crossing

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - Border Crossing, Lake Superior State University's new international literary and arts journal, will hold a launch party for its inaugural issue at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 at Bayliss Public Library in Sault, MI.

Select contributors to the journal will read at the event and copies will available for purchase that evening.

Border Crossing is a product of the creative writing program in the LSSU English Department.

Poets Julie Barbour and Jillena Rose founded the journal in fall 2010 to print work by emerging and established American and Canadian creative writers alongside extraordinary work by LSSU creative writing students.

The journal gives LSSU creative writing students the opportunity to gain valuable editing experience before graduation, and provides an outlet for visual art from residents of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Last spring, students in ENGL 409, Advanced Creative Writing, co-taught by Profs. Barbour and Rose, read and discussed submissions in class, collaborating to select international submissions for publication based on craft and artistic merit.

Featured alongside selected works are the winners of the 2011 Stellanova Osborn Poetry and LSSU Short Story Contests, “Fickle songs” by Aaron Fader and “The Muse of Dreams” by Sarah Becks, and the winners of the ENGL 110 and 111 Essay Contests, “Being One with the World: An Aberrant Reflection of Freire” by Justin Beach and “The Sustainability of Aquaculture” by Jacob Riley.

The issue also features artwork by Upper Peninsula visual artist Peter Donofrio and LSSU student Rachel Branstrom.

For the second issue, slated for publication this summer, Border Crossing will continue to feature writing by international authors alongside LSSU student writing and Upper Peninsula visual artwork.

A new faculty member, Mary McMyne, a fiction writer, joins the editorial staff as Prof. Jillena Rose steps down to work on outreach for the LSSU Creative Writing program.

Border Crossing will begin accepting submissions through submishmash on October 31 of this year.

A contest will be used to select visual artwork for the 2012 cover, which will again be limited to artists residing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Please visit the Border Crossing website for more information.

For more information on the launch party, contact Barbour at 906-635-2657 or by e-mail, or McMyne at 635-2327 or by e-mail.
