Theatre Algoma returns to the stage with The Love of the Nightingale

Theatre Algoma will present The Love of the Nightingale on March 7 to 10, 2007, at 8 p.m.

The production, directed by Professor Amanda Zuke, will take place in the Shingwauk Theatre at Algoma University College.

Tickets are available through the AUC Student Services office, and are priced at $10 for the general public, $8 for seniors, and $5 for students.

D.H. Lawrence called myth "an attempt to narrate a whole human experience, of which the purpose is too deep, going too deep in the blood and soul, for mental explanation or description."

Playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker has taken up this challenge with her powerful retelling of the myth of Philomele, an Athenian princess who struggles to find her voice in the aftermath of abduction, rape, and mutilation.

First produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1988, The Love of the Nightingale shares its sources – a myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses and fragments of Sophocles' lost play Tereus – with such classic works as Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus.

"Both the play and the original myth are very unsettling," explains Zuke.

"The story of Philomele [shown] poses questions which remain as important today as they were in ancient Greece," Zuke says. "Where is violence born? Who among us is granted the right to speak?"

"What happens when we take away not only the answers to our most difficult questions, but the questions themselves?"

The Love of the Nightingale explores the power of truth and the price of silence against a timeless backdrop of war and deceit.

For tickets, please contact Cindi Elgie at AUC Student Services by email, by phone at 949-2301, extension 4212, or by dropping into the office, room SH 206, Monday to Friday from 8:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
