East West Theater presents A.R. Gurney’s The Dining Room at the Downstream Garage

Shanghai - East West Theater (EWT) presents the play The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney under the guidance of director Jonathan Geenen.

This play will run daily from June 21 to 24 at 8 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees on June 23 and 24 at Downstream Garage, a venue that aims to promote theatrical and cultural exchange between the West and China.

Though this play focuses on the conversations and concerns within the upper-middle class American dining room, it explores changing social structures.

“The play really focuses on vanishing social, moral, and ceremonial structure. Whenever you have a chance to explore themes like these in a play, there are always a lot of surprises in the box for an audience as well as profound moments of discovery for the actors” says Geenen.

Also included in this event is a Chinese one-act drama Jiu Hou (Flushed with Wine) by early 20th century Chinese playwright Ding Xilin, a humorous exploration into the meaning of love and romance within the Chinese culture.

Jiu Hou will be performed in Chinese.
