Toronto Symphony Orchestra boasts Sault Ste. Marie connections

When the Toronto Symphony Orchestra rolls in to town on Wednesday, James Gardiner will be coming home.

James, a graduate of Sir James Dunn high school plays trumpet and has been with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) since 1999.

Prior to that he played in orchestras in Mexico City and Nova Scotia with the National Ballet of Canada.

Today he is in demand and can be seen playing in many ensembles including the Hannaford Street Silver Band, the Esprit Orchestra and the Toronto Bach Consort.

A native of Philadelphia, violist Gary Labovitz is in his 27th season with the TSO.

Active as both a soloist and a chamber music enthusiast, he is now enjoying his third season as the principal violist with Virtuosi di Toronto.

His prize viola was made by award-winning St. Joseph's Island instrument maker, Raymond Schryer.

Itinerary for Toronto Symphony Orchestra

Arrival

It is expected that the orchestra will arrive by bus at the Waterfront Holiday Inn at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday September 13.

Thursday and Friday members of the orchestra will bring their musical talents to the youth of Sault Ste. Ste. Marie.

They will entertain students in two concerts on Thursday at
the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre.

Friday they will fan out across the city and area to conduct workshops and play mini concerts in a number of high schools.

The Northern Lights Concert will take place Friday, September 15 at 8 p.m. at the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre.
