For the 15th consecutive year, Le Maschere Laurenziane, a student threatre troupe housed in Laurentian University's Italian Studies Program, will present their annual stage production.

This year the troupe will perform La donna volubile ("The Fickle Woman") by the renowned Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni.

La donna volubile takes place in 1750 Venice and revolves around a rich, young woman, Rosaura, who is unable to decide which of her three suitors to marry.

The decision is further complicated by her tendency to change her mind, often for trivial reasons.

Rosaura's father, Pantalone, a rich, old man is utterly clueless about the goings-on of his scheming elder daughter, but is extremely happy when his younger daughter Diana finds a rich husband.

All of these intrigues give rise to hilarious misunderstandings which are only resolved at the very end of the play.

Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793), one of Italy's most important playwrights, was born in Venice.

He studied law and practised intermittently, but his real interest was drama.

He discovered that he had a talent for comedy and wrote over 250 comic plays in Italian, French and the Venetian dialect.

He was greatly influenced by Molière and the commedia dell'arte.

La donna volubile belongs to a triology, together with Le femmine puntigliose and La donna di testa debole, which feature the different aspects of women in Goldoni's plays.

His best known plays are La locandiera (1753) and I Rusteghi (1760).

In 1762 he undertook to write for the Italian theatre in Paris and was attached to the French court until the revolution.

La donna volubile will be performed by Le Maschere Laurenziane on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. and at 8 p.m.; on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 8 p.m.; and on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Thorneloe University Theatre at Laurentian University.

Admission for all the performances is $5.

Tickets are available at D & A Fine Meats, The Casa del Formaggio, The Caruso Club, Ti Amo Classic Café (formerly The Sugar Shoppe).
