St. Mary’s Church will host the sixth program of the 2013 Historic Churches of Sault Ste. Marie season on Monday, August 5.

The 7 p.m. program will feature a presentation by Caroline Grabowski and Paul Sabourin on St. Mary’s Cemetery and Maple Ridge Cemetery’s Catholic Section.

They will show over 70 images of tombstones and present stories of area people from the past, derived from their extensive historical research.

Chippewa County Historical Society Board members Caroline Grabowski and Paul Sabourin led a Walking Tour of the Protestant section of Riverside Cemetery in June as a CCHS fundraiser.

Next year, they will present a Walking Tour of the Catholic side of Riverside Cemetery, called St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A tour of Maple Ridge Cemetery is schedule for this October.

St. Mary’s Church will be open for viewing from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Admission is free.

Donations are accepted and greatly appreciated.

Your donations fund the annual printing of the Historic Churches brochure.

Refreshments will be provided after the talk.

Built in 1881, St. Mary’s Church is located at 320 East Portage Avenue.

It is one of five churches featured this year on Monday evenings during the summer months.

The Historic Churches program is a project of the Chippewa County Historical Society.

2013 marks the Society’s 13th year of showcasing these landmark structures that have played significant roles in the cultural history of Sault Ste. Marie.

Residents and visitors to the area are invited to attend these programs.

Schedules are available at participating churches, the Chippewa County Historical Society, Bayliss Public Library, and area businesses.
