Shaftesbury Films acquires rights to Vincent Lam's Giller award winning book Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures

To be developed into a drama series for The Movie Network

TORONTO, Nov. 10 - Shaftesbury Films is thrilled to announce they have acquired the rights to Dr. Vincent Lam's Giller Prize award-winning book Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, which will be developed into a drama series for Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada).

Dr. Lam, a Toronto-based emergency-room physician, was awarded the prestigious 2006 Scotiabank Giller Prize on Tuesday, November 7, 2006.

"I'm thrilled to see that my book has started to take on a life of its own," said Lam about the acquisition by Shaftesbury Films for Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures.

The collection of short stories connects the lives of a group of young doctors as they move through medical school into the real world of emergency medicine.

"We're always looking for fresh new characters on which to base a television series. We believe we have found this in Vincent Lam's book which provides us with a fresh take on the medical profession. His characters of Fitzgerald and Chen are riveting," said Christina Jennings, chairman,
Shaftesbury Films. "We are delighted to be adapting his book, which deservedly won The Giller Prize, and thrilled that The Movie Network embraced the project and is working with us to develop the book into a dramatic series."

"E.R. is a medical drama for conventional television. Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, is a medical drama for pay television. The Movie Network is the perfect home for a series based on Dr. Lam's book - you think you are in for a journey through the expected world of what you know about doctors and medicine and instead you are treated to an unexpected, almost metaphoric journey of doctors dealing with powerful internal conflict and beautiful human frailty in ways that catch the reader off-guard," said Michelle Marion, director, Canadian Independent Production, The Movie Network. "We are thrilled to be working with the talented team at Shaftesbury - with whom we do the highly successful original series ReGenesis."

The book first came to the attention of Doubleday Canada after Vincent Lam and Margaret Atwood met on a northern sea cruise and she agreed to read some of his stories.

Shaftesbury Films and WTTV recently produced Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride, a two-hour television movie starring Mary-Louise Parker, which will debut on CBC TV on January 21, 2007, at 8 p.m. (ET).

Vincent Lam is represented by Shain Jaffe of Great North Artists Management, Inc., acting on behalf of Anne McDermid & Associates Ltd.
