Algoma – The Brian Pickell Band http://www.brianpickell.com will be offering a day of workshops and a dance on Saturday, November 19th sponsored by the Algoma Traditional Music and Dance Group (AlgomaTrad).

The band consists of 5 of Canada’s finest traditional musicians. Mark Sullivan, from Toronto, is the 2005 Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion. Brian Pickell, from Paris, Ontario, is an internationally recognized composer of fiddle music and plays guitar, mandolin and sings.

Julie Schryer, on piano and Pat O’Gorman, on flutes, whistles and bagpipes, are from the Algoma area. James Stephens of Chelsea, Quebec, is a fiddler and multi-instrumentalist. All the members of the group are well-known performers and recording artist in the world of traditional music. As well, stepdancer and dance-caller Dan Gorno, from Michigan, will be leading dance workshops and a dance at MacLennan Hall, near Desbarats. Workshops are subsidized by the Nicholas Missere Bursary Fund administered by AlgomaTrad.

Saturday, November 19th – workshops and dance

Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, tin whistle/flute and tune composition workshops at Emmanuel United Church, 224 Bennett Blvd, at Boundary Rd., Sault Ste Marie, starting from 11am. Group workshops will be $10 per person for 1 hour. This cost will also get you into the evening dance at MacLennan Hall, near Desbarats, for free. Dance workshops at MacLennan Hall with Dan Gorno. 1-hour novice step dance class followed by 2-hour couples workshop in tango/swing/waltz with further instruction in contras/squares/ceili dancing. Start time 1:30 PM. MacLennan Hall is at the corner of MacLennan Rd and Government Rd., north of Hwy 17, one road west of the St Joseph Island turnoff. $20 for a 3-hour workshop, or $30 for a couple. Workshop fee also includes the evening dance. Info and pre-registration call 782 4311
Dance (contras, ceili, and squares) at MacLennan Hall, 8PM, with Dan Gorno calling and the Brian Pickell Band providing music. $10 dollars at the door, children under 12 free, free for workshops attendees. Potluck dinner to precede dance.

AlgomaTrad http://www.algomatrad.ca is a non-profit organization that offers workshops in traditional instruments, dance and song to campers of all ages and all levels of proficiency.

We showcase and teach “traditional” music and dance that are part of the living traditions of Ontario’s, and indeed Canada’s, cultural heritage.
