Impressive rock 'n' roll memorabilia makes its debut at Barrett-Jackson

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona - The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, LLC, worldwide leader of collector car auctions, announced today it will make history by auctioning pieces of exclusive rock 'n' roll memorabilia at the Scottsdale 36th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction.

"Rock on the Block" will begin in the main auction tent at 5:30 p.m. during Barrett-Jackson's Family Value Day being held Monday, January 15.

"Cars and rock 'n' roll have always made a great pair and both have strong ties with the baby boomer generation," said Craig Jackson, CEO of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, LLC.

"The addition of rock memorabilia to the Barrett-Jackson offering was a natural fit," Jackson said.

"We are making history by offering collectors the greatest possible experience to find what they are looking for in both categories," he said.

"We're proud to continue to raise the bar each year and are thrilled to be the first collector car auction to offer such impressive rock memorabilia."

More than two hundred pieces of rock history and pop culture will be up for auction during "Rock on the Block," including items from famed superstars Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and various others.

Highlights to include:

Bill Haley

Bill Haley's main/primary 1940 Martin D-18 guitar [shown] used on the recording of the original rock 'n' roll songs, "Rock Around The Clock", "Shake, Rattle and Roll", and "See You Later Alligator."

A country musician in the 1940s, Haley made the first rock 'n' roll record, Rocket 88, in 1951 and coined the term rock 'n' roll with the release of Rock This Joint in 1952, two years before Elvis Presley's first recordings in 1954.

John Lennon

John Lennon's military band tunic from the famous 1966 Life magazine photo shoot.

The jacket was worn by Lennon during the classic Henry Grossman photo session in which The Beatles revealed their 'new look'.

The jacket is an authentic World War I era military band tunic, an incredible item of clothing which may very well have influenced the Beatles iconic apparel on the cover of Sgt. Peppers – perhaps proving to be the original 'Pepper' uniform.

Von Dutch

Von Dutch GMC Bus that he converted into a home and workshop.

Von Dutch turned the bus into his home and workshop after a building inspector came to his shop and said everything was not up to code.

There was nothing in the vehicle code that said you couldn't put a shop with machines into a bus.

The bus had all of the essentials Von Dutch needed to create his masterpieces – generator, air compressor, welders and metalworking tools.

Keith Richards

Keith Richards' 1974 stage-worn red Nudie's suit. This two-piece red suit was custom made for Richards by the legendary Nudie's Rodeo Tailor.

In 2006, the suit was featured in the Rhinestones and Twangin' Tones exhibit at the Fullerton Museum Center in Fullerton, California, which focused on Nudie's suits

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe letter written in 1954 to the U.S. Air Force base in Thule, Greenland.

This two-page handwritten letter was written by the legendary blonde bombshell, during the period in between her breakout role in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and her classic performance in The Seven Year Itch.

Monroe had been scheduled to accompany Bob Hope and William Holden on a USO performance, however illness forced her to bow out and she was replaced by Anita Ekberg.

Written to the troops in blue ink on plain white paper, the letter reads in part: "I'm a lot more disappointed than you are that I can't be there with you this New Year's. But the fact is I'm sick and my doctor won't let me go, but as soon as I'm able I'll be there any time you can persuade Secretary Talbot to give me a seat in a plane, to do a show for you, to meet you all and tell you I think you're the best men in the world," and is signed by Monroe in big, bold handwriting

Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash Martin guitar that he used extensively in the 1980s.

This guitar is the only one in the world embellished with the "Walk the Line" lyrics written in Cash’s handwriting.
