Nagata Shachu returns to LSSU by popular demand

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - A popular Japanese drumming (taiko) group will return to the Lake Superior State University Arts Center this month.

Nagata Shachu, formerly Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble, will perform at 8 p.m. on April 25 in the Arts Center's auditorium.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seats, $18 for seniors and $8 for students and children.

They are available online or by calling 906-635-2602.

Nagata Shachu, based out of Toronto, is a high-intensity taiko group that has been touring music festivals, concert halls and theatres across the U.S., Canada and Italy since its formation in 1998, with each performance as explosive as ever.

The group performed at LSSU as Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble in 2006.

"We have received more requests to bring this group back than we have for any performer to appear since the Arts Center opened in 2005," said LSSU Arts Center Director Tom Davis. "We are quite pleased to have them return."

The group's focus is to bring back the ancient art of Japanese folk drumming with new, exciting music.

The members are renowned for their physically demanding performances and diverse musical pieces.

This unforgettable experience combines distinctive drumbeats with flawless, intricate rhythms featuring Japanese taiko, gongs, bells, wooden clappers, shakers and bamboo flutes, resulting in a percussionist's delight.

What makes Nagata Shachu so unforgettable, besides its beautiful drumming, is how athletic the group is while playing.

The members' physical intensity seems unstoppable as they move gracefully across the floor with choreographed movements that have the precision of martial arts.

Not only does the audience get a musical performance and good look at Japanese culture, it gets a great dance experience, also, and the performance is something that will be amazing to both children and adults.
