A Raucous Sanctuary is a show of recent works by Algoma University College art instructor Noni Boyle.

Her brilliant and innovative use of materials such as wood, glass and paper captures the dynamic rhythms of nature and the splendor of our northern Ontario landscape.

A Raucous Sanctuary remains on display at the Art Gallery of Algoma, 10 East St., until December 1, 2007.

The Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Artist Statement

This body of work explores themes of identity and belonging through physical, sensual, and visual responses to landscape.

I attempt, in this work, to create (or recreate) a sense of those moments that deliver an intense awareness of our interconnection with the world, a connection that is both physical and spiritual.

For me, this feeling is grounded in memory and experience of the physical elements of our environment; water, fire, earth, and air.

These elements are referred to in the work through the images, the materials, and the processes employed.

I am interested in creating a dialogue between quite different states of awareness; between experience and memory, here and there, then and now, self and other.

Although most of the work is based in landscape, I am less interested in portraying the appearance of specific places than I am with capturing a sense of the rhythms and pulse of being there.

This work is my response to the robust and vigorous beauty of the Algoma area of northern Ontario.

It represents the sense I have of this place as no tranquil Eden, but rather a sanctuary of wild and intemperate beauty.
