Evening of sushi, sake, and karaoke for all

AMSA to host annual J-Night on Saturday

SAULT STE. MARIE - On Saturday, March 9, the Algoma Multicultural Students Association (AMSA), in partnership with the Algoma University Student s' Union (AUSU) and International Student Services, will be hosting J-Night, an evening of Japanese culture and food starting at 8 p.m. in the Speak Easy.

AMSA is a student-run association which promotes multiculturalism, internationalism, and diversity on campus.

J-Night is one of the most successful events hosted by AMSA, usually brining in crowds of 200-250 people.

Others events include Eid-UI-Fitr Feast at the end of Ramadan, the Chinese Spring Festival, Black History Month, and Diwali Dinner to celebrate the Hindu Festival of Lights.

These events bring celebrations of world events to Algoma University annually.

"J-Night provides the community of Sault Ste. Marie with the opportunity to become immersed in Japanese culture," says AMSA President and International Student Services Assistant Yuka Yamada. "The event allows our Japanese students the chance to share with others their values, attitudes, and identity, and fosters intercultural relations amongst the university and larger community."

J-Night is an annual event, which seeks to raise awareness about Japanese culture and diversity in Sault Ste. Marie.

Current Algoma University students from Japan will be making Japanese food, including sushi, okonomiyaki (a pancake-like dish, with cabbage and sweetened soy sauce), and nikujaga (a meat and potato dish).

The bar will also be open, serving Japanese beer and sake.

Some of the Japanese students will also be dressed in traditional Japanese garb, including the yukata (the summer version of the kimono).

The event will also feature an evening of karaoke.

The event is open to both the University community and the public, and entrance is by donation.

In the past, funds raised from J-Night were generously donated to the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan.

In 2011, J-Night was held on March 11, the same evening in which Japan was devastated by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake.

The event raised $1,000.

This year, all proceeds raised from J-Night will go to helping promote and organise future AMSA events.
